“Letter From God”
News commentator Paul Harvey passed away February 28,2009 at the age of ninety and I would like to share a few of my thoughts with you about him. This is what I originally wrote about him in Chapter Two WHO SHOULD I LISTEN TO in my book FIRST BUSINESS ADVICE.
The Chapter continues:
I am going to recommend three well known people to listen to as often as possible.
Paul Harvey-An American radio broadcaster. He broadcasts News & Comments.
Zig Zigler-A motivational speaker and educator from Dallas.
Dave Ramsey-A radio / TV broadcaster and personal finance educator.
You might ask why these three? Because of their integrity. Ask yourself this question, “If I had to spend the last five days of my life stranded in a lifeboat or on an island with a non family member or someone that is not a close personal friend, who I would choose?” For me, spending my last days on earth with any of these three men would be a blessing.
If you are going to listen to a stranger for advice about your future, he or she had better have the knowledge and integrity worth listening to. All of these men, in my opinion, fit that requirement. When you hear any of these men speak you will understand what I am talking about. They each speak from deep within their heart to help their fellow man and you can just feel it as they speak.
I grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma listening to Paul Harvey on the radio from the time I was a little boy. He would give the news report every day in his own special way. To me he was so interesting I even enjoyed hearing his commercials. You could not tell where the news stopped and the commercial began. All of his presentation came from the heart. I don’t remember him ever saying anything against anyone personally. His style and delivery is quite unique. Some of his catch phrases and quotes:
“Hello, Americans, this is Paul Harvey! Followed immediately by…”Stand by for news! “Or “You know what the news is. In a minute, you’re going to hear …the r-r-r-rest of the story! ”
In criticism of a past presidents policy he said “Mr. President, I love you but you are wrong.”
“Retiring is just practicing up to be dead. That doesn’t take any practice.”
“Every pessimist who ever lived has been buried in an unmarked grave. Tomorrow has always been better than today, and it always will be.”
“The best of time is right now.”
(His traditional Christmas Eve closer) “And remember, it’s His birthday-[pause]-not yours.”
(At the end of every news presentation he will say) “Paul Harvey-[pause]-Good day!” (Intonation rising significantly on “day”)
When Paul Harvey was three years old, his father, a Tulsa police officer was gunned down while trying to arrest a suspect. I have never heard him say anything bitter about that event or anybody for that matter. Here is a good family man who should be an example to all of us. This is the kind of person we should all listen to for advice as often as possible.
I might add, it has taken me a long time to write this book and in the mean time Paul Harvey’s wife “Angel” passed away. I was extremely saddened to hear that as they were as close to each other as my wife and I. My thoughts and prayers are with the Harvey’s at this time.
Paul Harvey is getting up in years and I hear him less and less on the radio. After hearing of his wife’s passing I think I understand. I am sure he wanted to by her side as much as possible. If he goes on to heaven before you have a chance to hear him speak please look him up on the internet. There is a lot of inspiration to be learned from him.
THEN I ADDED THE FOLLOWING AS MY BOOK WAS BEING PUBLISHED.
Paul Harvey passed away February 28, 2009 at the age of ninety as this book was at the printer. I think he would like for me to say he has joined his wife in “forever together.” He called her “Angel.” One of his radio lines when he mentioned someone’s anniversary was something like “today Mr. and Mrs. Jim Jones from Tulsa, Oklahoma are celebrating fifty years of on their way to forever together.” Then he might add “and we wish them fifty more.”
I listened to Paul Harvey for almost fifty years on the radio and even saw him up close in person one time but unfortunately never got to shake his hand. He was a kind gentle Christian family man that only had good things to say about his fellow man and the United States of America. He had a very positive effect on my life and I am sure many other Americans as well. He will be missed by all us Americans whose life he touched so often. I am certain Paul Harvey and his wife Angel will rest in peace in “forever together.” He and Angel were truly Great Americans and our hearts go out to their family.
A great tree has fallen, and left an empty place against the sky…
